DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z APRIL 28, 2008

Update to earlier text narrative...
South Central Canada to South Central US:
GOES-West Visible imagery using the favorable morning low sun angle
showed a very large region of possible thin smoke likely still leftover
from large fires burning in Russia. The smoke appeared to extend from
the south central Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and
Ontario southward and southeastward across the central US to as far
south as south central Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The smoke
also extended as far east as the Great Lakes region and the Ohio Valley,
but cloudiness across this area interfered some with smoke detection.

Southwestern Gulf of Mexico:
Smoke from the ongoing seasonal fires burning across portions of Mexico
and Central America appeared to be confined to the Bay of Campeche and
the southern Gulf of Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
