DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z May 12, 2008

Florida:
Several fires erupted along the east coast late in the day. Generally
moderate smoke plumes extended up to 180 km to the east of these fires
in Volusia County, and in northern and southern Brevard County.

Gulf of Mexico:
Residual smoke from fires in Central America mixed with haze that has been
progressing from west to east across the US the last two days was moving
eastward across the northern third of the Gulf of Mexico in advance of
a frontal boundary.

Arizona:
Light smoke extended 50 km northeast of the Twenty-Two Wfu in Coconino
County.

Southwest:
A large area of mid to upper level haze of unknown composition and
origin has again invaded the US along and ahead of a frontal boundary
that stretched from central California into southern Nevada and across
central Utah into Colorado.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
