DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z May 27, 2008

Northern Canada/Montana/South Dakota:
Widespread thin smoke can be seen over much of British Columbia,
northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, western Manitoba and into North Dakota
and eastern Montana.  The source of this smoke is likely large fires
burning in eastern Russia.  There are many smaller fires in Saskatchewan
which are emitting light smoke which is traveling to the west.

Gulf of Mexico
Dispersed remnants of smoke from yesterdays fires in Mexico is visible
over much of the western Gulf of Mexico.

New Mexico:
Light to moderately dense smoke from a fire located in E Colfax county
extends  over 100 km NE into Las Aminas county CO.

Louisiana:
There are many fires located in/near the parishes of Avoyelles, St. Landry
and Pointe Coupee.  These fires are producing mainly light smoke which
is traveling NE into Mississippi.

Florida:
Two fires located on the the west coast of Lake Okeechobee in Glades
county are emitting light to moderately dense smoke which extends through
Hendry and Lee county into the Gulf of Mexico.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
