DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z May 29, 2008

Canada:
In Central Manitoba Province, there are currently five fires producing
smoke plumes; four which are heavy in density, and one which is moderately
dense. These plumes are generally moving off to the east and southeast,
including one which is very large in aerial extent. In addition, a
band of moderately dense smoke stretches out from east-central Manitoba
southeast into western Ontario. This band of smoke is presumably caused
by the jet stream carrying smoke from fires in Russia.

Texas/Louisiana:
In Aransas County, a moderately dense smoke plume is currently moving west
into Webb County and crossing into the northern territory of Chihuahua.
The plume extends out 100 miles from the source. Also, an area of
light smoke and/or haze is currently settled over the coastlines of
Texas and Louisiana.

North Dakota:
A quick puff of heavy smoke is moving to the north into southern Manitoba,
and extreme southeast Saskatchewan in Canada. In addition, there are
numerous agricultural burns in the state moving to the north.

Montana:
In Flathead County, a moderately dense smoke plume is moving to the east
through the rest of the county, and extends out 40 miles from the source.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
