DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z JUNE 4, 2008

Manitoba/Ontario:
An extremely large fire complex continues to burn over central Manitoba
between Cedar Lake and Lake Winnipeg. Evening satellite imagery
shows an expansive area of moderate to extremely dense smoke extending
from northern Lake Winnipeg towards the western shores of Hudson Bay.
The densest portion of the smoke plume has evolved into a large pyrocumuls
cloud complex that extended from the extreme northern portion of Lake
Winnipeg and Playgreen Lake northeasts to about 125 miles from it's
point source.

California/Arizona:
Several fires near the Salton Sea area and near the vicinity of the
Colorado River Valley have combined to produce a thin smoke plume that
was seen drifting off towards the southeast this evening.

Lower Mississippi River Valley:
A large number of agricultural fires were detected this evening but
only a few featured smoke plumes detectable on satellite imagery.
Any detectable smoke plumes were mostly thin to locally moderate in
density and were seen drifting towards the north and northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
