DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1445Z JUNE 8, 2008

North Carolina:
A large wildfire in Tyrrell and Washington Counties is continuing to
produce heavy, dense smoke blowing in an east-southeast direction over
the Outer Banks and Atlantic Ocean. A narrow but thick plume extend
about 240 miles eastward into the Atlantic Ocean. Light to moderate
smoke continues to cover much of the offshore area east of the Carolinas
and Florida where some of this light smoke extends westward across much
of the northern portion of that state.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
