DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JUNE 11, 2008

North Carolina:
Heavy to moderate smoke from the Evans Road fire in eastern North Carolina
extended along the Atlantic seaboard from near the North Carolina/South
Carolina border up through Cape Cod. Some thin smoke had spread inland
through the Mid Atlantic states into southeast New England. However,
most of the moderate to thick smoke extends eastward from the blaze into
the Atlantic.

Northern Saskatchewan:
Numerous large fires continue to burn over northern Saskatchewan west
of Reindeer Lake and around Lake Athabasca. These fires are producing a
large amount of dense to very dense smoke which is swirling around and
gradually spreading outward. The smoke extent now covers much of the
area between Great Slave Lake and Lake Winnipeg, including northeast
Alberta and much of northern Manitoba.

California:
Several fires developed quickly in central California in the afternoon
and produced plumes of smoke that mainly drifted to the south. A fire
in northeast Sonoma county had light to moderately dense smoke that
swirled around northern Sonoma and then drifted south over the Pacific
and northern Marin county. A fire in Solano county had light to moderate
smoke that drifted south across Contra Costa. A fire in central Sacramento
county had a narrow smoke plume that extended south into southeast
Stanislaus. A fire in extreme southwest Tuolumne county had a plume
of light to locally moderately dense smoke that extended south across
Mariposa into Madera. A fire along the central Madera/Fresno border had
a plume of moderate to locally dense smoke that reached into northwest
Tulare. Finally, a fire in the Las Padres National Forest near Tassajara
generated a large plume of dense smoke that moved south over the whole
western length of San Luis Obispo and extending about 65 km off the coast.

Colorado:
A fire that developed rapidly over northern Las Animas county has a plume
of moderately dense smoke that extended to the northeast into northeast
Bent county.

Arizona:
A pair of blazes in nortwest Coconino and northern Gila counties has
narrow plumes of thin smoke that extended to the northeast less than
75 km.

Georgia:
A fire in southern Effingham county this afternoon produced a light to
moderately dense smoke plume that extended to the east and then southeast
across Chatham county and off the coast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
