DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z JUNE 13, 2008

North Carolina:
Moderately dense to dense smoke from the Evans Road fire extends toward
the west covering most of eastern NC and extending north into western
Virgina and to the east over the Atlantic Ocean. At its furthest extent
east, the plume is between 25-37 N out to 50 W from the east coast.
The South 1 fire is producing moderately dense to dense smoke which is
moving to the west along the Virginia/NC border merging with the smoke
from the Evans Road fire.

Colorado:
The Bridger fire in Las Animas County is emitting light to moderately
dense smoke which is traveling to the northeast extending over 150km.

Utah:
East central Millard county near Mt. Katherine is the location of a
fire which is generating light smoke which is being transported 180km
to the southeast. Another fire in southeast Beaver county, southeast
of the town of Beaver, is emitting light smoke moving to the southeast
extending over 140km.

Nevada:
Smoke from a fire in north central Nye county, in the central Monitor
range, is light to moderate and traveling to the southeast over 60km.

California:
In central Butte county, the Humbolt fire is emanating moderately
dense to dense smoke which is spreading out as it travels to the south.
Light smoke from a smaller fire in southwest Tahama county, near Ball
Mountain, is merging with the Humbolt fire smoke. Along the west coast
in Monterey county moderately dense to dense smoke from the Indians fire
was moving to the west earlier today but has shifted to the east as the
day has progressed. The western portion of the smoke is over the Pacific
traveling to the northwest 70km before being obscured by a marine cloud
and merging with the smoke from the Martin fire in Santa Cruz county.
The smoke traveling east from Indians fire has reached the southwestern
border of Monterey and Fresno counties over Cholame Mountains.

Canada:

There are several fires in northern Saskatchewan are producing light
to dense smoke. Clouds have obscured the view from late afternoon to
evening but earlier the smoke could be seen moving north and then being
transported to the east extending all the way across the Hudson Bay
reaching the western coast of Quebec.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
