DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z JUNE 14, 2008

Washington:
A light to moderately dense smoke plume is currently moving southeast from
southeastern Kittitas County. Another fire located on the border of Benton
and Umatilla Counties has a small smoke plume moving to the northeast.

North Carolina:
Moderately dense to dense smoke from the Evans Road fire extends toward
the west about 130 km, then bends northward into south-central Virginia.
Smoke from the South 1 fire is producing a moderately dense to dense
smoke plume moving northward into eastern Virginia. Dispersed smoke from
theses fires covers much of eastern North Carolina, eastern Virginia, and
southern Maryland; as well as off the coast of South Carolina extending
out 350 km over the Atlantic Ocean.

California:
The Indians Fire in Monterey County, is producing dense smoke and extends
to the north into Santa Clara County and Stanislaus County, while lighter
smoke is found further to the west in Mineral County, Nevada and as far
north as Humbolt County in California. The Whiskey Fire in southern
Tahama County is producing dense smoke to the north into Shasta County,
with most of the dense smoke staying in Tahama County.

Colorado:
The Bridger Fire in Las Animas County is producing a moderately dense
smoke plume and extends to the north about 125 km. A second fire to
the southeast, in Conejos County, is also producing a moderately dense
smoke plume and is moving off to the northeast.

Nevada:
Smoke from a fire in north-central Nye County, in the central Monitor
Range, is producing moderately dense to dense smoke some 250 km to the
west into Utah.

Northern Plains:
Light smoke associated from fires in Saskatchewan is moving to the south
and east around a low pressure system in Canada and is currently moving
into eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota.

Canada:
Widespread thin smoke mixed with clouds can be seen over much of
Saskatchewan and eastern Alberta.

EVANS

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
