DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z JUNE 15, 2008

North Carolina/US East Coast:
Moderately dense to dense smoke from the Evans Road fire extends toward
the north-northeast over 150 km merging with the smoke being emitted
from the South 1 fire. The smoke from both the fires then continues to
the north covering the northeastern seaboard through Massachusetts.

Southeast US: An area of haze can be seen off the east coast stretching
from the South Carolina shore as far south as Grand Bahama Island.
This area was apparent earlier in the day and was staying offshore but
now appears to be moving west coming close the the east coast of Florida.
This area of haze is believed to be the remnants of the South 1 and
Evans Road fires.

California:
The Indians Fire in Monterey County continues to produce moderately dense
to dense smoke which extends to the north passing through Santa Clara
county and into Alameda county. The Whiskey fire in southwestern Tehama
county is generating moderately dense to dense smoke which is traveling
to the northeast into Shasta county. There is light smoke from both
the Indians and Whiskey fires which extends from southern Kings county
CA north into Klamath county and passes through Elko county Nevada to
reach as far northeast as Owyhee county Idaho. The counties of Washoe,
Humbolt and Pershing have an area of particularly dense smoke over them
as of 0000Z.

Otero, Pueblo and Huerfano counties. There are reports the fire has
burned over 42,000 acres.

Oregon:
A few fires on the west coast of Oregon in Coos and Douglas counties
are producing light to moderately dense smoke which is drifting to the
southwest off the coast. Another small fire in southern Grant county
is emitting light to moderately dense smoke which is moving to the east.

smoke which extends over 60km to the south.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
