DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z JUNE 15, 2008

North Carolina/US East Coast:
Moderately dense to dense smoke which is most likely a combination of
the Evans Road and South 1 fires extends toward the northeast merging
with the clouds of the old frontal boundary making the extent of the
smoke difficult to decipher.

Southeast US: An area of haze can be seen off the east coast of the
US from South Carolina to the Grand Bahama Island. This area appears
to be quasi-stationary may be remnants of the South 1 and Evans Road
fires which traveled to the south earlier in the week.

Northwest and North Central US:
A large area of of remnant smoke from the Indians and Whiskey fires can
be seen extending across much of the western and central US. The smoke
begins in northern California and travels through southern Idaho,
northern Nevada, central Wyoming, northern Utah and Colorado and into
southern South Dakota, all of Nebraska and northern Kansas

Canada:
Moderately dense to dense smoke from the fires in northern Saskatchewan
can be seen throughout Saskatchewan and northern Manitoba with a faint
trace in northern Alberta.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
