DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z JUNE 16, 2008

North Carolina/Virginia:
The fires located in western North Carolina continue to produce locally
dense smoke that becomes moderately dense as it moves east out over the
Atlantic Ocean. A fire on the North Carolina/Virginia border is also
producing locally dense smoke that was moving to the east this morning
and currently fanning out towards the Delmarva peninsula. Remnant smoke
from this fire is mixed in with the smoke from the North Carolina fires
off of the coast.

New Mexico:
Remnant smoke presumably from yesterdays large fire in Garfield county
Utah is over northeastern New Mexico moving into northern Texas.

California:
The Indians fire in Monterey county continues to burn generating
moderately dense to dense smoke which is fanning out
to the west almost to the coast. This area of smoke is covering most of
the county as it fans out to the north and south. The Whiskey fire in
Tehama county is producing locally dense smoke which is slowly moving west
into Mendocino county. Remnant smoke from last night is moving to the
northeast from Siskiyou and Modoc into Klamath county in southern Oregon.

Canada/Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley:
Clouds are obscuring the fires located in northern Saskatchewan.
Remnant smoke can be seen stretching from Reindeer Lake into southwestern
Manitoba, through the Dakotas and Minnesota, and ending in Iowa.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
