DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JUNE 17, 2008

Southeast US:
The large fire complex over Tyrrell, Dare and Hyde counties in eastern
North Carolina continue to produce locally dense smoke that becomes
moderately dense as it moves east out over the Atlantic Ocean. Residual
mainly light smoke smoke from this fire has also spread to the south
and covers a broad area of the Southeast, including much of eastern
North Carolina, most of South Carolina, eastern Georgia and the Florida
Panhandle. A fire on the North Carolina/Virginia border in the Great
Dismal Swamp is also producing locally dense smoke that was moving to
the east and northeast across Virginia Beach and into the Atlantic.

Lower Mississippi Valley:
A tremendous number of fires were observed over eastern Arkansas,
northeast Louisiana and the Missouri Bootheel. Several of these produced
short puffs of light smoke in the late afternoon that merged together
mainly over eastern Arkansas and drifted to the east.

Texas:
A pair of fires in west Texas in southeast Crockett and southern Brown
counties were producing lengthy smoke plumes around 200 km that extended
to the north-northwest. The plumes were light to moderately dense.

Utah:
A fire in central Garfield county had a plume of light smoke that extended
to the east about 100 km.

California:
The Indians fire in Monterey county continues to burn generating
moderately dense to dense smoke which extends east into the central
valley. Remnant smoke has drifted north along the foothills of the Sierra
reaching to a little west of Lake Tahoe. A fire in southeast Tulare
county had a plume of light to moderate smoke fanning out to the east
and west with 50 km of the blaze. The Whiskey fire in Tehama county is
producing locally dense smoke which is slowly moving east across the
county. An area of thin smoke then also extends to the northeast and
covers much of northeast California.

Oregon/Idaho/Montana:
Thin remnant smoke from the Whiskey fire has spread across much of eastern
Oregon, the southern two thirds of Idaho and southwest Montana. Two
fires over western Lane county Oregon produced moderately dense to
locally dense smoke that moved east into the central part of the county.

Canada/Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley:
Clouds are obscuring the fires located in northern Saskatchewan.
Remnant smoke, mostly light but with areas of moderately dense to dense,
can be seen stretching covering virtually all of Manitoba, northern
Saskatchewan, the eastern Dakotas, much of Minnesota, northern Iowa
and southern Wisconsin. A detached area of thin smoke was also seen
over northern Ohio. A fire southeast of Great Slave Lake had a plume of
moderately dense smoke extending to the northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
