DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z JUNE 18, 2008

California:
In Monterey County, a moderately dense smoke plume is currently moving to
th south over the Pacific Ocean and extends out 650km. The smoke plume,
at 650 km out from the source, appears to bend towards the east towards
the coastline around San Diego.

Virginia/North Carolina:
Along the border, in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North
Carolina, a moderately dense smoke plume extends 65 km to the south and
east over Pasquotank and Camden Counties.

Upper Midwest/Ohio Valley:
A broad area of light smoke has wrapped around a low pressure system in
eastern Canada. The extensive area of smoke is presumably from fires
in Saskatchewan and Manitoba over the past several days, and is moving
through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, northern Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
