DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z JUNE 21, 2008

North Carolina/Virginia/Atlantic:
The Evans Road and South 1 fires in eastern North Carolina and the Great
Dysmal Swamp are obscured by clouds this morning. Wind flow patterns
in the area suggest smoke from these fires would be confined to extreme
eastern portion of North Carolina and southeast Virgiana and extend east
into the Atlantic. An area of light smoke can be seen from off the New
Jersey coast eastward, just to the south of Long Island and Cap Cod.

California/Nevada/ Utah:
Residual smoke from Indians fire in Monterey county and the Clover
fire in Tulare county was seen extending from central California across
southern Nevada and into central Utah. The smoke in California and Nevada
was generally thin while the smoke across central Utah was moderately
dense. The smoke in California was drifting to the north-northeast across
the central Sierra Nevada while the smoke in Nevada and Utah was drifting
to the east.

Arkansas:
A small patch of light smoke was seen over north central Arkansas drifting
to the south.

Saskatchewan/Manitoba:
A fire in northern Saskatchewan south of Lake Athabasca has been producing
a plume of moderately dense to dense smoke that extends to the southeast
with the smoke running from the eastern tip of Lake Athabasca to the
southern portion of Reindeer lake and into west central Manitoba.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
