DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z JUNE 24, 2008

Western US:

A large complex of wildfires are producing smoke that spreads northeast
across lower southeast Oregon to southern Idaho. Older light smoke
from these fires can be found over most of Nevada, Utah and Northern
Arizona. Another large fire near Big Sur is producing thick smoke that is
moving south along the coast to the Channel Islands west of Los Angeles.
A fire in northern Greenlee county of Arizona is producing a plume of
smoke that was moving east and dissipates over central New Mexico.

Central US:

A small streak of old western US smoke can be seen dissipating from
central N. Dakota into central Minnesota west of Duluth.

Eastern US:

Continuing fires from the eastern Virginia North Carolina border south
to the Dismal Swamp are producing smoke over the outer banks and off
the coast of the N. Carolina.

Canada:

Smoke can be seen extending from the northwestern corner of Great Slave
Lake west of Yellowknife northwest across southern Great Bear Lake and
continuing to the northwest to near Fort McPherson.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
