DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z JUNE 25, 2008

California/Western US:

Several large conglomerates of wildfires in the north central part of
the state, roughly 25 in all, are producing moderately dense to dense
smoke across most of central and northern California above 37N. Smoke
from these wildfires are spreading north and east, with lighter smoke
moving into southeast Oregon and southern Idaho, but also into most of
the state of Nevada, most of Utah, and western Wyoming. Another large
wildfire, the Indians wildfire in Monterey County, near Big Sur, is
producing dense smoke which is moving south along the coastline to the
Channel Islands west of Los Angeles, and to points further south.

Arizona:

The Hot Air wildfire in northern Greenlee county is producing a dense
plume of smoke that is currently moving to the northeast. The plume
extends roughly 150km from the source and has moved into western New
Mexico, into Catron and Socorro Counties.

North Carolina/Virginia:

The South 1 and Evans Road wildfires continue to burn and produce
moderately dense smoke over extreme southeast Virginia and northeast
North Carolina; specifically around the town of Duck along the Outer
Banks before moving offshore.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
