DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z JUNE 25, 2008

California/Western US:

Several large conglomerates of wildfires in the north central part of
the state are producing thick smoke which extends south throughout the
Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys. Additional plumes of thick smoke
stretch northeast across northern California into southeastern Oregon as
well as across northwest Nevada into southern Idaho. A much larger area
of light smoke stretches across Wyoming and then southeastward through
the central Rockies and into the central and southern Plains.

The Indian fire in Monterrey County generated dense smoke that extended
southeastward along the coast and over the Channel Islands.

Arizona:

A narrow plume of smoke from the Hot Air wildfire in northern Greenlee
county was moving east southeast before becoming obscured by clouds.

Arkansas:

Light residual smoke from ag fires was moving north across northeastern
Arkansas, southeast Missouri and western Tennessee.

North Carolina/Virginia:

Moderately dense smoke from The South 1 fire moved north across the
lower Chesapeake. Latest visible imagery suggests the smoke plume has
veered to the east in the last hour. Light residual smoke extends into
the Atlantic off the North Carolina coast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
