DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JUNE 28, 2008

North Carolina/Virginia:
Light to moderately dense smoke can be seen coming from the Evans Road
and South 1 fires moving to the northeast into the Atlantic. The clouds
along the coast obscure some of the smoke but it appears to extend from
the middle of the North Carolina coast north to Massachusetts.

Georgia:
Light smoke from a fire which appears to be on Cumberland Island of the
coast of Georgia by the Florida border extends 50km to the northeast
over the Atlantic.

Arizona:
A large fire located in Maricopa county is producing moderately dense to
dense smoke which is traveling to the north. There is another small fire
in Maricopa county emitting light smoke which is also traveling north.

California:
Several large wildfires and numerous smaller wildfires in northern
California continue to emit large amounts of moderately dense to dense
smoke which covers much of California, north of 35N, and extends to the
west over the Pacific Ocean.

Central US:
Light smoke remnant from the California fires previous days burning can
be seen extending across much of the central United States. States over
which the light smoke can be seen include: central Nevada, northern
Utah, southern Wyoming, northern Colorado, southern Nebraska, most of
Kansas and western Missouri.

Canada:
In northern Saskatchewan near Lake Athabasca several fires are generating
light to moderately dense smoke which is traveling to the south.
On the west coast of Lac Sakami in Quebec, a fire is producing light
to moderately dense smoke which extends southwest reaching the eastern
shore of James Bay.
South of Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories a fire is emanating
moderately dense to dense smoke which is traveling west extending over
200km. Another fire to the west of Great Bear Lake and still in the NW
Territories is light to moderately dense smoke which is also traveling
to the west.
In the central eastern portion of the Yukon Territory there are several
small fires producing light to moderately dense smoke.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
