DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z JUNE 29, 2008

North Carolina/Virginia:

The South 1 wildfire is producing a narrow, dense smoke plume which
extends to the northeast from the fire in the Dismal Swamp along the
border of North Carolina and Virginia to Norfolk. As the smoke plume
moves further out over the Atlantic Ocean, the dense smoke becomes
much lighter and expands to the north near the coastline of southern
New England. The Evans Road wildfire flared up earlier this afternoon
producing light to moderately dense. The smoke extends to the east over
the Outer Banks and continues to move east over the Atlantic Ocean.

Northern Plains:

Light to moderately dense smoke from the Saskatchewan fires is moving
south over the western Dakotas, eastern Montana, eastern Wyoming,
eastern Nebraska, and north-central Kansas.

California/Oregon:

Several large wildfires and numerous smaller wildfires in northern
California continue to emit large amounts of moderately dense to dense
smoke which fills the entire San Joaquin valley and coastal areas from
near Big Sur up the coast and over the western half of Oregon.

Canada:

In northern Saskatchewan south of Lake Athabasca, numerous fires are
producing light, moderately dense, and dense smoke. Most of these
plumes are moving off to the south and southeast, over the rest of
Saskatchewan, western Manitoba, and also into the northern plains of the
United States. One dense smoke plume in particular is located near 55N
and 103W, moving to the southeast and extending out 170km from the source.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
