DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JULY 1, 2008

Mid Atlantic Coast and New England Coast:
A plume of moderately dense smoke from the South 1 fire in the Great
Dysmal Swamp extended to the east-northeast across the Norfolk area and
then thinned somewhat as it extended further to the northeast into the
Atlantic and off the Cape Cod coast.
Light residual smoke from the Evans Road wildfire in eastern North
Carolina was contributing to the broader smoek area in the Atlantic.

Upper Mississippi Valley/Western Great Lakes:
An area of moderately dense and dense smoke covered much of eastern
Minnesota, eastern Iowa and northwest Wisconsin. This was embedded in
a larger area of light smoke that extended into northern Michigan and
the remainder of Minnesota.

Arizona:
Moderate to heavy smoke from the Lane 2 fire in Yavapai county is now
moving to the southwest and covers much of southwest Arizona and extreme
southeast California.

Western US/Western and Central Canada:
A huge area of smoke from the incredible number of fires burning in
California covers most of norrthern and central California, western Oregon
and into the Pacific off of Vancouver Island. The smoke is thickest with
the Piute and Indians fires in Kern and Monterey counties respectively and
is moving to the north. Very thick smoke was also seen with the fires in
Trinity, Shasta, Tehama, Mendocino, Butte and Placer counties. The smoke
area then curves from the Pacific back to the east and becomes thinner
and extends inland over much of central and southern British Columbia,
Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Central Canada:
In northern Saskatchewan and northwest Manitoba, a large number of fires
have exploded this afternoon. The fires extend from the north shore of
Lake Athabasca south and eastward into central Saskatchewan and south and
just east of Reindeer Lake. Very dense smoke was extending from these very
large blazes to the east and southeast and reach into northwest Ontario.

Alaska:
A narrow area of thin smoke of unknown origin was seen slowly drifting
east late this evening. This area stretched from the northwest part of
the state southward across Cook Inlet where it then curled back to the
northeast toward Valdez.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
