DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z JULY 3, 2008

North Carolina/Virginia:
One thin plume of smoke from the Dismal Swamp fire along the NC/VA
boarder was moving NE over Virgina Beach and continued to off the lower
Delmarva. The other fire between the Sounds of NC was also moving NE
over the barrier island north of Kill Devil Hills.

Louisiana:
A small plume of smoke could be seen moving north from Marsh Island into
south central portions of the state.

Western US:
A fanning plume of heavy smoke was generally moving south along the
coast from the fire near Big Sur to Point Conception. Another fire
near Santa Barbara also had smoke moving south over the Channel Islands
where it combined with the Big Sur smoke that continue south to off Baja
California. Light to moderate smoke from numerous fires in Northern CA
continues to trap smoke in the San Joaquin Valley and light smoke can
be seen spreading north and east into northern Nevada and southern Oregon.

Arizona:
A fire in Yavapai county is generated light smoke that is moving south
and southwest and dissipating before reaching the Yuma area.

Canada:
Smoke from numerous fires in Saskatchewan between Lake Athabasca and
Lac La Ronge  is moving east and southeast in Manitoba and into west
central Ontario. A short plume of some light  smoke could also be seen
moving northwest from a fire near Fort Nelson British Columbia.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
