THROUGH 0145Z JULY 5, 2008

North Carolina/Virginia:
The Evans Road and South 1 fires continue to emit moderately dense to
dense smoke plumes. Both plumes are generally moving off to the northeast,
with light smoke extending at least 700 km to the northeast, just off
the coast of New England.

California/Nevada:
Throughout most of California above 34N, especially in Santa Barbara
County in the south, and most of northern California, dense smoke
is covering these areas. Light smoke from yesterday's fires was seen
earlier today over the central part of the state drifting east into far
western Nevada.

Northern US/Canada:
Earlier today, moderatelu dense smoke from large fires in
Saskatchewan/Manitoba was observed heading off to the southeast, moving
into the rest of Manitoba and western Ontario. Lighter smoke from these
fires moved further south, into the United States. In fact, the light
smoke moved all the way down to Oklahoma, affecting areas such as the
Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri.

New Mexico:
The Bailey wildfire is producing a moderately dense smoke and is moving
northwest, extending into Catron County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
