DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1445Z JULY 7, 2008

St. Lawrence Valley and Ontario:
Residual smoke from fires in Saskatchewan and Manitoba can be seen
moving east across Gulf of the St Lawrence back into New Brunswick.
Other residue smoke can be seen of north-central Ontario and across
James Bay.

Northest US:
Smoke covers much of eastern Washington and northeastern Oregon.
This extends over the northern half of Idaho and all Montana as well
the the border region with Canada.

California: Relatively small plumes from the ongoing fires in northern
and central California are drifting south and southwestward over the
Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valley. Some of this smoke
may extend off the coast but low stratus clouds precludes detectection.

Alaska and Northwestern Canada:
Smoke from the ongoing fires in eastern Alaska (One fire was about 55 km
to the south-southeast of Fort Yukon and the other about 50 km to the
north of Fort Yukon) are somewhat entrap in a low pressure system and
are still lingering across central Alaska and into northwesterm Yukon
Territory and into Mackenzie Bay on the Beaufort Sea.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
