DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1430Z JULY 8, 2008

Eastern North Carolina/Middle Atlantic Coast:
Light haze and smoke is visible throughout northeastern North Carolina,
southeastern Virginia and the Cheasapeake Bay region.

California:
The large fire east of Red Bluff is emitting very thick smoke this
morning and, along with a large number of other fires in northern
California, moderate smoke covers most of the Sacramento Valley and
coastal northwest California. This smoke is carried well offshore to
perhaps as much as 300 nautical miles westsouthwest of San Francisco
before becoming unobservable in a marine layer of low clouds.

Northern Plains:
Smoke that was over the northwestern U.S. yesterday has now been carried
eastward into the northern Plains and can be seen, in between clouds,
covering portions of the Dakotas, Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.
A separate narrow band of smoke is stretched from southern Saskatchewan
in Canada, to northern North Dakota.

Alaska:
Conditions are too cloudy for specific observation of smoke in Alaska
this morning but there may be some residul smoke still lingering in the
northern Yukon of northwest Canada.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
