DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z JULY 11, 2008

California/Nevada/Oregon/Idaho/Montana/Wyoming/Colorado:
Numerous large wildfires burning across northern California and Napa
Valley, in the counties of Humboldt, Mendocino Trinity, Tehama, Siskiyou
and Shasta are producing area of dense to very dense smoke south to
southeast across parts of northern/central California. The wildfires
burning in Plumas, Butte, Placer and parts of Shasta counties are emitting
dense to very dense smoke east into Nevada, southern Idaho and western
Utah. The wildfire in Monterrey county (Big Sur) is producing very
dense smoke towards the east NE across central sections of California.
Most of California's northern and central sections are covered with dense
to very dense smoke. This dense to very dense smoke is reaching parts
of southeast Oregon, northern and central sections of Nevada, across
parts of southern Idaho (southwest to northeast direction), southwest
Montana and northwest Wyoming. Moderately dense smoke reaches parts of
central/southern Nevada, most of Utah (except for the southern region),
southern Wyoming and a large section of northern and western Colorado.
Light smoke stretches across southern regions of central California,
southern Nevada and sections of northern Colorado. Overall.....Lots
of smoke.

Washington/Idaho/Montana:
Possible wildfires in Douglas, Chelan, Kittitas (all in the Wenatchee
National Forest), Grant (north of Moses Lake), Benton (Saddle Mountains),
Okanogan (Okanogan National Forest), Spokane (northeast of the city)
and Nez Perce (Nez Perce National Historical Park in western Idaho)
counties are producing an area of moderately dense to dense smoke south
to southeast across a large section of central and eastern Washington
into northern Idaho and now reaching western Montana. The moderately
dense to dense smoke is combining to make one large overall plume.

Oregon:
A fire in northern Wasco county (Mt. Hood Wilderness Area) is producing
a moderately dense to dense smoke plume moving south SE into Sherman,
Gilliam, Wheeler and Jefferson counties. In northern Jefferson county
a fire is emitting light to moderately dense smoke moving southeast into
Deschutes and Crook counties.

Northern Saskatchewan/Northwest Territories:
Wildfires burning north of Lake Athabasca are producing an area of
moderately dense to dense smoke pushing north into the southern Northwest
Territories region. Residual smoke from these fires is located in the
north central Northwest Territories region and continues to move north.
The wildfires west/northwest of Great Slave Lake continue to produce
moderately dense to dense smoke. Some of the smoke from these fires is
moving east across sections of Great Slave Lake while other fires are
emitting smoke toward the southwest.

Colorado:
A wildfire in the Grand Mesa National Forest in west Mesa County is
emitting light to moderately dense smoke east into Delta and Gunnison
counties. A fire in northeast Mesa county is producing a light to
moderately dense plume of smoke east into Garfield and Pitkin counties.
The smoke from both of these fires is combining with the smoke from the
California wildfires.

Florida:
A fire in south central Polk county is emitting light smoke northwest.
The smoke is staying within county borders. A fire in northwest Dixie
county is emitting light smoke east into Gilchrist county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
