DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JULY 12, 2008

California Smoke:
Heavy, dense smoke from the numerous fires burning in northern California
covered much of the northern half of the state with light to moderate
smoke across the southern half. Light smoke extended off the southern
California coast southward to offshore of the Baja Peninsula. Moderate
smoke was moving east across much of Nevada, the northern two-thirds
of Utah, Colorado and Nebraska while lighter residual smoke continued
eastward from there across the northern Plains, Upper Midwest, Great
Lakes and northern Ohio Valley.

Washington/Oregon:
A fire in Thurston County produced a light plume of smoke that extended
90 km south while smoke from the Badger Mountain and Browns Canyon fires
reached 60 km to the southeast. Light smoke extended south from the Mill
fire in Oregon.

Northwest Territories:
A fire on Great Slave Lake near Gypsum Point produced heavy and moderately
dense smoke that extended across the lake with residual light smoke
reaching 300 km to the southeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
