DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z JULY 12, 2008

California Smoke:
Heavy, dense smoke from the numerous fires burning in northern California
covered much of the northern half of the state with light to moderate
smoke across the southern half. Light smoke extended off the southern
California coast southward to offshore of the Baja Peninsula. Moderate
smoke was moving east across Nevada, Utah, Colorado, northern Arizona,
northern New Mexico and southern Nebraska where it was obscured by
cloud cover. In a break in the clouds over Missouri a haze can be seen
which may also be smoke from the California fires.

Washington:
Light to moderately dense smoke which is traveling to the north into
Canada can be seen in north central Washington.

Saskatchewan/Central Northwest Terriorites:
An area of what may be remnant smoke from the Great Slave Lake fire last
night can be seen over much of Saskatchewan and north into the Northwest
Terriorites. There is also a thin ribbon of haze which extends from
western Saskatchewan, through eastern Montana, into North Dakota where
it turns north again through Minnesota and back into Ontario, Canada.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
