DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z JULY 16, 2008

California/northwestern US:
Smoke from the fires burning in northern California can be seen extending
across the northwestern United States. The moderately dense smoke
covers most of Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Lighter smoke can be seen in
southern Washington State, northern Nevada, northern Wyoming and central
North Dakota.

Washington:
A wildfire in southwest Yakima county in the Mt. Adams Wilderness Region
is spreading moderately dense smoke east across central Washington and
combines with the smoke moving northeast from California wildfires.

Arkansas:
A fire on the border of Drew and Lincoln counties is producing light to
moderately dense smoke which extends over 30km to the west.

Canada:
The fire located on the north side of the Great Slave Lake is still
producing moderately dense to dense smoke which extends to the south
east passing over Lake Athabasca and well over 250km into northern
Saskatchewan. There is also an area of haze in Ontario which may be
residual smoke from the California fires or the fire on the north side
of the Great Slave Lake.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
