DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JULY 21, 2008

Impact of the California fires:
The fires in northern California continue to emit moderately dense
to dense smoke. This smoke extends through northern California and
Oregon into Washington. The smoke then begins to disperse becoming
light to moderately dense. This lighter smoke can be seen in southern
British Columbia, southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan. It is
also located throughout Idaho, Montana, the Dakotas, Nebraska and into
Minnesota and Iowa.

Northwest Territories:
Moderately dense to dense smoke can be seen coming from the northwestern
shores of the Great Slave Lake. The smoke is moving NNE and extends
over 400km.

Central Canada:
A light haze, which is likely remnant smoke from last night, can be seen
over the northern portions of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as the
southeastern Northwest Territories.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
