DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z JULY 23, 2008

Northern California fires:
Moderately dense to dense smoke is covering the northern third of
California. This area stretches south to Monterey county where the
smoke then moves off to the southwest. To the northeast, this area
is stretching to the Oregon/Washington/Idaho border, and south to the
northern Nevada border.

Montana:
An area of moderately dense smoke, most likely from the fires in
California, is moving east across the southern portion of the state.

Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley:
A large area of remnant haze and light smoke is hanging over the
southern plains and lower Mississippi valley this morning. The densest
areas appear to be over eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas and moving into
Tennessee and Mississippi.

Southeast/Mid-Atlantic:
Off the coast of the Carolinas and the Mid-Atlantic states, there is a
batch of light smoke and/or haze drifting off to the east.

Canada:
In the southern region of the Northwest Territories, near the borders
of Alberta and Manitoba, a few fires are producing moderately dense to
dense smoke. The smoke is generally moving off to the east. In addition,
in northwest Manitoba, moderately dense smoke from fires are drifting off
to the east. However due to the presence of clouds, it is difficult to
see how far out the smoke extends. Lastly, over the Hudson Bay area, light
smoke in early morning visible imagery shows light smoke and/or haze.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
