DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z JULY 24, 2008

Northern California fires/Northwest US:
Wildfires are producing moderately dense to dense smoke, and is covering
most of the northern third of California. Due to weak steering currents,
the smoke is moving off in all directions. However, the smoke that is
drifting to the north and east has made its way through southeast Oregon,
Idaho, northwest Nevada, western Montana and southern Canada. In addition,
in Monterey County, a moderately dense to dense smoke plume is drifting
to the south and eventually moves out over the Pacific.

South Dakota:
A moderately dense smoke plume in the far western region, in Custer
County, is currently moving east and extends out at least 75km.

Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley:
A large area of remnant haze and light smoke is situated over the southern
plains and lower Mississippi Valley. The light smoke/haze has been around
most of the day and has only drifted to the north slightly.

Canada:
Several large fires in northern Saskatchewan, around Lake Athabasca,
and the southern region of the Northwest Territories, are producing
moderately dense to dense smoke. For the most part, the smoke is drifting
off to the south, however, due to weak wind patterns, some of the smoke
is also moving off to the north.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
