DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1400Z JULY 28, 2008

Impact of Western Fires:
Moderately dense to dense smoke covers portions of northwest California,
southern Oregon, southern Idaho, Montana and Wyoming as a result of the
numerous fires in northern California, the Cascade fire in Carbon County
Montana and the Gunbarrel fire near Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

Impact of Canadian Fires:
Moderately dense to dense smoke extended from fires in northern
Saskatchewan southeast into the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley
and northern Mid Atlantic states out into the Atlantic Ocean south of
New England. Another band of moderately dense to dense smoke stretched
northwest from these fires across the Northern Territories to the border
with Yukon Territory. Still more smoke reached eastward across northern
Hudson Bay.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
