DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1400Z JULY 29, 2008

Impact of Western fires:
Fires in California, (Park County) Wyoming and (Carbon County) Montana,
have combined to produce:
Dense smoke in eastern Wyoming, western South Dakota and northwest
Nebraska;
Moderate to dense smoke from northern California to eastern Washington;
and
A large area of light smoke covering all or portions of California,
Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota,
North Dakota and Colorado.

Impact of Canadian Fires:
Moderately dense to dense smoke from the fires in northern Saskatchewan,
north of Lake Athabasca, and the fires in the Northwest Territories can
be seen stretching from the Beaufort Sea, through northern portions of
the Yukon, the southern Northwest Territories into northern Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba and then across Hudson Bay.

Eastern Half of the US:
A combination of smoke from the Western and Canadian fires has produced a
large area of light to isolated moderate smoke across the Upper Midwest,
Great Lakes, Mid Atlantic, New England and the western Atlantic Ocean.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
