DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z JULY 30, 2008

Eastern US:
A couple fires in Virgina and Pennsylvania are adding some smoke to the
humid haziness from east of the Appalachians to the coastal waters of
the Atlantic from the Carolinas to New York.

Northern Plains:
Some residual smoke from the fires in California is combining with light
smoke from a few fires in Wyoming and western Montana that can be seen
over South Dakota and Nebraska.

California:
The numerous fires in the northern portion of the state continue to emit
moderately dense to dense smoke. The densest of this smoke is moving to
the north and remains within northern California and south central and
southeastern Oregon. The smoke also extends northeast over Northwestern
Nevada and southern Idaho. Due to marine clouds the smoke from Monterey
county can not be seen this morning and there is only a faint trace of
smoke moving south and north along the eastern edge of the Sierra from
the fire west of Yosemite.

Canada:
Through breaks in the cloud cover, dense to moderate smoke can be seen
from the fires near Lake Athabasca and The Great Slave Lake stretching
from western Hudson Bay near Churchill west across northern Manitoba
and Saskatchewan and into a large portion of the Northwest Territories
and continuing north out into the Beaufort Sea.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
