DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z JULY 31, 2008

Northern Plains:
Moderately dense smoke is covering central South Dakota and northern
Nebraska due in part to the large wildfires in the west. Lighter smoke is
covering the rest of South Dakota and Nebraska, Kansas, western Colorado,
the panhandle of Texas, and also east into Iowa.

California:
Numerous large wildfires in the central and northern regions of the state
are producing moderately dense to dense smoke plumes. Most of the smoke
is advancing towards the north and east, extending into northern Nevada
and southern Idaho as moderately dense smoke, and also into southern
Oregon as lighter smoke. One dense smoke plume in particular is situated
near Yosemite National Park, with dense smoke moving towards the north
and extending out at least 50km.

Wyoming:
Two dense smoke plumes in the northwestern region of the state, in Park
and Sublette counties, are currently moving east. Both plumes extend
out at least 150-200 km from their sources.

Montana:
In Carbon County, in the south-central region of the state, a moderately
dense to dense smoke plume is currently moving to the east, but is
unknown how far it extends from the source due to clouds.

Idaho:
A light to moderately dense smoke plume in Bonneville County is racing
off the northeast.

Washington:
Several fires in Franklin and Grant counties produced light to moderately
dense short-lived smoke plumes earlier this afternoon. These plumes were
moving to the east.

Hawaii:
Earlier this evening, a light smoke plume near South Point was moving
off to the southwest over the Pacific Ocean. However due to clouds,
it is unknown how far the plume extended from the source.

Canada:
Although there is a lot of cloud cover obscuring smoke, moderately
dense to dense smoke can still be seen covering a vast area of northern
Canada. Fires near and around Lake Athabasca and The Great Slave Lake
are producing light to moderately dense smoke, which stretches from
eastern Hudson Bay, west across northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan,
and also into the central portion of the Northwest Territories. The
smoke is also found as far north as the Beaufort Sea.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
