DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z AUGUST 02, 2008
General Smoke Content: As the sun sets on the east coast of the United States, smoke from earlier today and possibly some remnant smoke from yesterday can be seen passing through the central United States (IA, AR, IL, IN, OH, KY) and the east coast (WV, VA, MD, PA, NJ, DE) before continuing off the coast over the Atlantic. This smoke is likely from the fires in California, Wyoming and Montana. Kansas: Several smaller agricultural burns in central Kansas are generating discrete puffs of smoke which are traveling north. Montana: The Cascade Fire in Carson County continues to generate dense smoke which extends over 300km to the northeast merging with smoke from the Wyoming fires and entering South Dakota. Wyoming: In Park County there are two large fires, one named the Gunbarrel Fire, which are producing moderately dense to dense smoke which is moving the northeast where it merges with the Cascade fire smoke. Further south in Sublette County the New Fork Fire is producing dense smoke which is moving northeast extending over 300km entering Johnson County. Utah: In Tooele, Utah and Duchesne counties there are fires which are emitting light to moderately dense smoke which is traveling northeast. California: The fires in northern California continue to emit moderately dense to dense smoke which is moving to the north east. The smoke remains dense to moderately dense through the southeastern portion of Oregon and central Idaho. The density of the smoke lessens at this point as it continues through Montana, southern Saskatchewan and into the Dakotas. In southern California the Telegraph Fire in Mariposa County continues to burn but is only generating light smoke which is traveling to the south. In Monterey County near the coast a small plume of light smoke can be seen moving to the south along the coast. Washington: In northern Okanagan County a fire is producing light to moderately dense smoke which is fanning out to the north entering into the Canadian Province of British Columbia. There is also a fire in Douglas County which is also emitting light to moderately dense smoke which is also traveling north into British Columbia. -Salemi
