DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z AUGUST 03, 2008

Central US:
There is a large area of haze across the central US that is likely
remnant smoke from the fires in northern California, southern Montana,
and northern Wyoming. The area of haze extends from Montana and Wyoming,
through the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas,
Mississippi, and Louisiana.

California:
The fires in northern California are emitting moderately dense to dense
smoke which is traveling north through southern Oregon and into central
Idaho.

Canada:
Remnant smoke from the fires by Lake Athabasca and the Great Slave Lake
can be seen  between the cloud cover moving from east of the Great Slave
Lake north beyond Victoria Island.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
