DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z AUGUST 06, 2008

North Texas:
A fire located in Castro county southwest of Amarillo is producing a
small area of localized smoke that is drifting west.

N CA/Pacific Northwest/N. Idaho
Even though there is a large area of clouds over northern California and
most of Oregon, the numerous fires in NW California continue to produce
smoke that can be seen moving north over Washington state, northern
Idaho and into extreme southern British Columbia. The smoke also spreads
west out over the coastal waters north to Vancouver Island. The smoke is
moderately dense over the area from Olympic peninsula and Puget Sound,
southern three quarters of Vancouver Island and then east to near Kelowna
in south central BC. .

South East US:
A large area of mixed remnant smoke and summer haze can be seen over
the coastal Southeastern states of Georgia and North and South Carolina
extending off shore around 450 miles.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
