DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z AUGUST 08, 2008

Washington/British Columbia:
A fire in Okanogan County is producing a moderately dense smoke plume,
extending north 150 km into southern British Columbia. Lighter smoke from
the fire is also drifting to the north and extends out at least 250 km.

Northern California:
Several fires in Siskiyou and Trinity counties are emitting light to
moderately dense smoke. The smoke is drifting to the north and extends
into central and western Oregon, paralleling the coastline, and then
moving into central Washington. Light smoke from these fires is merging
in with smoke from the fire in Washington State, creating a broad area of
smoke, stretching from northern California northward into southern Canada.

Northern Plains/Southern Canada:
Light smoke is currently drifting to the east in eastern Montana, eastern
Wyoming, the Dakotas, northern Nebraska, western Iowa, southern Manitoba,
and southern Saskatchewan.

Northern Canada:
Remnants of light to moderately dense smoke from wildfires last evening
near Lake Athabasca and also near Great Slave Lake is drifting to the
east and northeast. The areas affected include the south-central region
of the Northwest Territories, northern Alberta, and northern regions of
Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
