DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z AUGUST 09, 2008

Northern California/Oregon/Washington/Western and Central Canada/Northern
Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley:
An area of moderately dense smoke extends northward from the
northern California wildfires and is combining with smoke from the
Oregon/Washington wildfires. The moderately dense smoke moves north
through central/eastern Oregon and central Washington. The smoke becomes
less dense once reaching parts of southern/central British Columbia
and extends northeast across parts of central/northern Alberta and
northern Saskatchewan. The smoke becomes a little more dense in the
Northwest Territories and parts of northern/central Saskatchewan as it
combines with the smoke from the wildfires around/near Lake Athabasca
(northern Saskatchewan side) and Great Slave Lake. The smoke moves east
NE across northern Saskatchewan and the southern Northwest Territories
and begins to take a south SE movement across Manitoba. Smoke becomes
less dense once reaching southern Manitoba and the northern Plains and
Upper Mississippi Valley (eastern/central North Dakota/South Dakota and
northern Minnesota/Wisconsin.

Saskatchewan/Northwest Territories:
As mentioned above numerous wildfires around/near Lake Athabasca and
Great Slave Lake are producing a large area of moderately dense to small
pockets of dense smoke moving east NE and combining with smoke from the
Northern California fires.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
