DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z AUGUST 10, 2008

California Fires:
Wildfires producing light to moderately dense smoke in northern California
is drifting to the northeast through Siskiyou, Shasta, Trinity, and
Modoc counties. The smoke continues to advance to the northeast and
reaches southeastern  Oregon, specifically in Klamath, Lake, Harney,
and Owyhee counties. Some light smoke is also making its way into western
Idaho. Furthermore, residual smoke from last evenings fires is present in
western Montana, southern Alberta, and southern Saskatchewan, in Canada.

Canada:
Residual light to moderately dense smoke stretches across the southern
region of the Northwest Territories, from the Great Slave Lake, eastward
to Hudson Bay. Light smoke is also found in the northern regions of
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario as well.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
