DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z AUGUST 13, 2008

Northern California:
A few fires in the northwestern corner of the state, in Siskiyou County,
are producing moderately dense smoke plumes at the time being. These
plumes are advancing to the southwest. Otherwise, residual light smoke
covers most of the northern region of the state due to last evening's
fires.

Northwest US/Upper Plains/Canada:
A narrow band of SO2 around FL310 stretches east across southern Oregon,
southern Idaho, central Wyoming, and then bends northward/northwestward
into the Dakotas, eastern Montana, and Alberta, Canada. The band is
roughly 70km wide.

Canada:
Residual light smoke from yesterday is found in the upper regions of the
Northwest Territories, where the clouds are broken, and also in northern
Manitoba, stretching eastward into Ontario and over Hudson Bay. Because
of extensive cloud cover, it is difficult to see where the smoke starts
and ends over most of the region.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
