THROUGH 1500Z AUGUST 15, 2008

Central US:
Early morning imagery shows SO2 plumes across eastern Idaho, western
Wyoming, Montana, and through North Dakota and then sweeping southeastward
through southern Minnesota, Wisconsin and the southern part of the
Great Lakes. Some SO2 also covers the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and
Lake Superior. There may be residue smoke involved with these regions
but it is indistinguishable at this time.

California:
A small plume of smoke covers extreme northwest California into southwest
Oregon.

Canada:
Some light smoke can be seen in northern Manitoba just west of Hudson Bay.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
