DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z AUGUST 16, 2008

California/Oregon/Washington:
Numerous fires in the northern region of the state are producing light
smoke, with some pockets of moderately dense smoke mixed in. Lighter
smoke is found moving north along the Pacific coastline in Oregon and
southern Washington State.

Idaho:
Pockets of light smoke are found near the fires from last evening,
especially in Elmore County and Idaho County.

Canada/Upper Midwest:
Residual light smoke from last evening's fires is situated over the
Great Lakes region and upper Midwest of the United States including
Minnesota, northern Michigan, and Iowa; also southern Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, Ontario, and Hudson Bay. Due to extensive cloud cover over
central Canada, other areas of smoke cannot be seen.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
