DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z AUGUST 17, 2008

California:
The fires in northern California are emitting moderately dense to
dense smoke which is traveling to the north. The smoke thins as it
moves north but still affects most of Oregon and Washington, as well as
northern Idaho and Montana and the southern portions of British Columbia,
Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Oregon:
On the border of Hood River and Clackamas counties a fire is emanating
moderately dense to dense smoke which is fanning out to the north and
east entering into Wasco, Sherman and Gilliam counties. The smoke also
crosses the state line and affects both Klickitat and Yakima counties
in Washington State.

Washington:
Two fires on the western border of Chelan County are producing light to
moderately dense smoke which is moving to the east.

Idaho:
In eastern Idaho County there are several fires which are emitting light
to moderately dense smoke which is traveling southward. The South Parker
Fire in Elmore County continues to burn generating light to moderately
dense smoke which is fanning out to the south and east.

Canada:
In northern Saskatchewan and southern Northwest Territories, between
the Great Slave Lake and Lake Athabasca there are many fires which are
producing light to moderately dense smoke. The smoke smoke from these
fires extends well over 250km crossing Lake Athabasca and approaching
the Manitoba border before being obscured by clouds.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
