DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z AUGUST 24, 2008

Wyoming/South Dakota/Nebraska/Montana:
Residual smoke from several fires in Park County was seen in an arc
from extreme southeast Montana across extreme northeast Wyoming and
into western South Dakota (including the Black Hills) and into western
Nebraska. The smoke was mainly thin except for a patch of moderate to
dense smoke in western Nebraska. The northern portion of this area was
moving east and the southern portion was dropping to the southeast.

Idaho/Montana:
A fire along the border of Elmore and Camas counties was producing a
plume of smoke that extended to the northeast and fanned out, covering
much of the eastern two thirds of Montana. The smoke in Montana was
light. Closer to the fire the smoke was moderately dense in the valleys
in Elmore county and in a narrow plume to the northeast of the fire in
extreme northwest Blaine and southwest Custer counties.

Central Canada/Hudson Bay:
An area of residual light smoke could be seen on early morning visible
imagery along the Ontario/Manitoba border region extending to the north
northeast into Hudson Bay near Coats Island in the north central portion
of the Bay.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
