DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z AUGUST 25, 2008

Wyoming:
In Park County, a few fires are producing light to moderately dense smoke
plumes. The plumes are extending to the east into Big Horn, Sheridan,
and Johnson counties. Because weather clouds are present over the general
area, it is difficult to say whether or not the smoke plumes are denser
than what is seen.

Nevada:
A moderately dense to dense smoke plume in Elko County, in the
north-central region of the state, is currently moving to the northeast
into south-central Idaho, specifically Twin Falls and Cassia counties.

Idaho/Montana/Midwest:
A batch of fires along the border of Elmore and Camas counties is
currently producing a moderately dense to dense plume of smoke which
extends to the northeast into Custer and Lemhi counties, in east-central
Idaho, and also into extreme southwest Montana. Residual light smoke from
earlier today in central and eastern Montana has since dissipated as it
moved eastward into the Dakotas and northern Nebraska. Also, along the
border of Idaho and Lemhi counties, a light to moderately dense smoke
plume extends to the northeast into Ravalli County, Montana.

Saskatchewan/Manitoba:
Residual light smoke is situated over south-central Saskatchewan and
central Manitoba, moving south, while the lighter smoke from earlier
today over the Hudson Bay region has since dissipated.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
