DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z AUGUST 26, 2008

Idaho/Utah/Nevada/Wyoming:
Extremely thick smoke extended over 400 km to the northeast of the East
Slide Rock Ridge, South Barker and Border Complex fires while moderately
dense smoke extended east and northeast from the Gunbarrel fire and
from a new fire in southern Salt Lake County, Utah. Residual light
to moderate smoke covered portions of Montana, the Dakotas, Nebraska,
Kansans and Saskatchewan. Cloud cover was inhibiting the detection of
smoke from other prominent fires, such as the Cottonwood.

Thick plumes of blowing dust stretched from western Nevada northeastward
to near the Oregon and Idaho borders.

Minnesota:
Light smoke moved north into southern Manitoba from a handful of fires
near the border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
