DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z AUGUST 28, 2008

Idaho:
The South Barker Fire in Elmore County is generating light to moderately
dense smoke which is traveling to the east.

Wyoming to north central Plains:
In Park County the Gunbarrel Fire continues to emit light to moderately
dense smoke which is traveling to the east. The smoke from this
and the South Barker fire merge and cover all of Wyoming, western
S. Dakota/Nebraska and northern Colorado.

Central US/South Central Canada:
There is an area of dense haze over eastern Kansas/Oklahoma and western
Missouri/Arkansas and an area of lighter haze coming through Saskatchewan,
southern Manitoba, N. Dakota and Minnesota. These areas are most likely
remnant smoke from last nights' fires out west and north of Lake Athabasca
mixing with other atmospheric pollutants.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
